Cane Fresh Beverages was shocked to discover that most of the sugarcane farmers were not educating their children. If affordability was an issue to some of them, availability of schooling options was another hurdle. Government run schools in the area lacked basic facilities like classrooms, blackboards, toilets, drinking water etc. Many schools were even run under a tree!
In addition to investing on our own, Cane Fresh also involved a few voluntary organizations, and together, we are in the process of building several schools, or repaired existing ones in the villages where sugarcane is cultivated, basically in the districts of Mandya and Maddur in Karnataka. In addition to building classrooms, we will be providing black boards, toilets, drinking water, uniforms, books, play equipment, computers, and with the help of the state Government - ensure adequate teaching staff is available at the schools. From time to time, we will also be conducting medical camps to detect health issues if any in the students, and recommend a course of treatment.
Our efforts have paid off, and today, most of the sugarcane farmers have their children enrolled in these schools. We also ensure that out of every glass of sugarcane juice that is sold at Rs.15, 15 paise (or 1%) is set aside to support these initiatives. So, every time you sip a glass of juice at Cane Fresh, you can be sure – you are contributing to a good cause!
